2010 UK Britannia £2 Silver Bullion Coin

95.8% Pure Silver

The largest and purest UK legal tender coin, the Britannia coin is struck by the Royal Mint from 1oz of 95.8% pure silver.

New Portrait of Britannia

The 2010 coin’s reverse portrays a new serene portrait of Britannia, the Roman goddess who came to personify Britain. Designer Suzie Zamit explains: “I wanted to portray Britannia as strong and courageous looking, but not overly warlike; more peaceful and protective. I have given her a Corinthian-style helmet and incorporated a lion on the design: the lion being the national symbol of courage - I wanted to emphasize the strong and watchful connotations - and this also links in with Greek and Roman coinage which display many animals.”

United Kingdom Legal Tender

Depicting the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse, the coin is issued as legal tender of the United Kingdom.

The Battle of Balaklava 1854 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Balaklava served as a supply port for Britain and her allies during the Crimean War. Having resisted a Russian attempt to capture the town, the British Light Brigade was ordered to disrupt their withdrawal. But the command was misinterpreted, resulting in the charge of 660 men “into the valley of Death”. The realities of the disaster were brought home with startling impact by The Times newspaper’s battlefield correspondent William Howard Russell, and immortalised in verse by Alfred Tennyson in The Charge of the Light Brigade.

Proof Quality 99.9% Pure Silver

The coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.

Coloured Reverse Design

The coin’s reverse, which includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, portrays a coloured depiction of the Light Brigade’s ill-fated charge. Struck elements of the design portray a Cossack and a representation of the British commander, Lord Cardigan, on a horse.

Issued as Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin bears the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2009 year-date on its obverse.

Extremely Limited Mintage

The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of these coins.

Struck by The Perth Mint, the coin comprises 1oz of 99.9% pure silver with a central core made of non-precious metal.

Coloured Reverse Design

The coin’s reverse portrays Apollo 11 during different phases of its historic mission and an astronaut’s footprint on the surface of the Moon. These elements, which appear on a coloured representation of the Universe, together with the border inscription 1969 - FIRST MAN ON THE MOON, literally ‘orbit’ around a coloured image of Earth.

Issued As Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of the Cook Islands, the coin's obverse depicts the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2009 year-date and the monetary denomination surrounding another coloured image of the Earth.

Limited Mintage

The Perth Mint will release no more than 25,000 ‘orbital’ coins celebrating the 40^th anniversary of the first Moon walk.
