2009 Kangaroo Art Gold Coin - USD$165

There is huge international interest in Australian Indigenous art, the oldest ongoing tradition of art in the world, which The Perth Mint is proud to portray on these innovative rectangle-shaped coins.

99.99% Pure Gold

The coins are struck from 10g, 5g and 2.5g of 99.99% pure gold. (2.5g denomination used in obverse illustration.)

Unusual Rectangle Shape

The rectangular coins are the perfect shape for the Indigenous-style art portrayed on their reverses.

Reverse Design Inspiration

Created by Darryl Bellotti, an Indigenous artist of both Yamatji and Nyoongar descent, the design is inspired by his boyhood memories of a hunting trip in north-western Australia. The kangaroo is surrounded by patterns of dots, symbolising the hunters’ journey, and circles, representing the places where they stopped.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, each coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on its obverse.

Illustrated Presentation Pack

Each Kangaroo Dreaming coin is housed in a beautifully illustrated presentation pack which includes Darryl Bellotti’s signature and his evocative description of hunting in the Australian bush.

Certificate of Authenticity

The pack incorporates a Certificate of Authenticity.

South African Krugerrand Gold Bullion Coins

The Krugerrand from South Africa, first minted in 1967, was the first gold coin to contain precisely one ounce of fine gold and intended as created to provide a vehicle for the private ownership of gold. By bestowing legal tender status upon the coin, Krugerrands could be owned by citizens of the United States, who at that time were prohibited private ownership of bullion, but allowed ownership of foreign coins.

Since inception, the Krugerrand has become the most widely owned bullion coin in the world with over 46 million ounces in circulation. The Krugerrand gets its name from Paul Kruger, featured on the obverse, president of the old South African Republic. The reverse depicts a springbok, one of the national symbols of South Africa. The name “South Africa” and the gold content are shown in both Afrikaans and English.

The success of the Krugerrand led to other gold producing nations minting their own bullion coins, including the Canadian Maple Leaf in 1979 and the American Eagle in 1986.
